Sundown Mountain is actually the nice surprise that welcomes west of Dubuque, Iowa. It is nested in the Iowa cliffs near the Mississippi River. Sundown Mountain's individual charm is its gorgeous natural location with slopes that were carefully engraved into the 45-acre mountain area to protect the splendor of an aged cedar forest. Five chairlifts operate on 21 downhill slopes along with a new ski carpet to further improve the training area. The runs for beginners are rather gentle for even the most fearful novices, and yet the more difficult slopes and mogul trails are tough enough to defy experts. Sundown also caters a 7-acre terrain park that includes a quad lift, new rails, fun-boxes, hips, waves, tabletops and a 100-yard half-pipe. General snowmaking capabilities balance natural snowfall, providing an incredible winter from mid-November through mid-March. About 100 professional ski instructors will train you from your first day on ski to more difficult slopes. And, Sundown has a program for kids that provides your child a fun-filled day at the ski area. Good news for those who travel in groups. Sundown has a fixed group rental system, reducing the time wasted to fill out forms and wait for boots, skis and adjustments. You will have your skis and boots set to their specifications, arranged alphabetically, all forms filled out. The only task for you is to pick them up and go to ski. Sundown caters excellent service and that was obvious in 1989 when the area was given the important Award of Excellence by the National Ski Area Association. The resort was the one ski area in the Midwest to get the honor. If you are getting to Sundown Mountain from Dubuque, Iowa, so you have to follow U.S. 20 to the N.W. Arterial, just west of Dubuque.
