Schweitzer Mountain Resort is nested in the Northern Idaho Panhandle between Montana and eastern Washington, about 50 miles south of Canada and 11 miles northwest of Sandpoint, Idaho. Including Stella, Idaho's first six-pack, Schweitzer now offers 2,900 acres of diverse and thrilling terrain. The area consists of two very large bowls, and within each of the two, there are two smaller bowls divided by gradually sloping ridges. There is difficult and vertical skiing at the top of the bowls, with less challenging terrain down below. Beginners with any experience can take the majority of the lifts to the top, as there are several edges of the mountain and roads, which an easy way down. One of the advantages of skiing in Schweitzer is most of the lifts are available for friends and families that want to ski together, but from the top can choose steep and challenging, long mogul runs, long intermediate cruising runs, or easy runs down. Schweitzer has great slopes for snowboarding with four wide open bowls, wide runs, ideal tree skiing/boarding and a full-time half-pipe. If you would like to learn to snowboard or to take the board for rent, all that is available. The peak and terrain are such that families of different ski skills can ride the lifts together, go to ski together, then take different trails for their skills and then meet again for more rides up the lifts together. The resort village is tiny and simple which helps to move about the town easily and provides safety of children. If you are considering your children’s vacation, think over Kinder Kamp at the resort. It is something like summer camp for kids as they may go in for different activities, arts, music, cookie baking and outdoor adventures. Here you may try plenty of activities on and off the mountain. You may choose among sleigh rides, guided sledge-car tours, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, NASTAR, individual race courses, hot tubs, massage, live music, theatre, free movies for the kids, open ski tours, church, après-ski parties and different ski seminars. There are lots of lodgings to select from, for instance, a marvelous, European-style chalet on-mountain with 82 rooms, including suites, efficiency kitchenettes and Jacuzzi rooms. You can find here more than 50 condos units on-mountain for rent and numerous bed and breakfast places, hotels and motels in the town of Sandpoint. The resort is the site of excellent skiing opportunities for about 30 years. It is remarkable for its breathtaking views of the vast Lake Pend Oreille and mountains of Montana, North Idaho, Canada, Eastern Washington and beyond. The views are very alike Lake Tahoe, but Idaho offers a more convenient, true and friendly small town atmosphere accented by an astonishing number of local events, theater and music.
