Smokovce – large Slovakian resort in the High Tatras. The resort unites several villages: Old, New, Mountain, and Lower Smocovec. Old Smocovec is the administrative center of the High Tatras. Not only sport rest, but even walking round these places is a pleasure: villas and houses in Tatrian style huddled to picturesque spruce-forested hills against the background of distant mountain peaks. The highest peak is Gerlahovski Štit (2655 m) where one can get with a guide only. Smocovce has downhill trails of different categories. The most difficult one is Horna Luka. To reach the start point one shall get to Hrebienok (1263 m) by funicular and than to the altitude of 1500 m (platter pull). Hrebienok is the main skiing center in Smokovce. Here the trails of different level start, including easy trails that are perfect to train on. Here starts the best toboggan track (2 km, lightened on Wednesdays). Good slopes for training are also near the villages, for example Jakubkova Luka in New Smokovec (860 m, lightened from 18.00 to 21.00) or mountain slope above Bellevue hotel in Mountain Smocovec. Such trails are served by platter pulls. One of the resort’s advantages is perfect conditions for children’s skiing: it has ski schools, children’s downhill trails and lifts. Old Smokovec is a traditional Slovakian resort that preserved the charm of old times in some of its parts. At the same time it is modern village with well-developed infrastructure: restaurants, bars, discos, supermarkets and department stores, sport complexes, cinemas, bowling alley, post office, drug store, service center, and library are waiting for the guests all the year around.
