Whakapapa

Whakapapa is the name of a rugged, scenic ski resort, which is located on the side of an active volcano. The weather there is the most frustrating. And when it is clear, then skiing there may truly be called the most challenging in the entire country; although there is the bad weather, which often comes storming in, seemingly attracted by Mount Ruapehy and its neighbouring volcanoes that become the reason of such a bad visibility that the most challenging skiing becomes obscured from view.

After the resort has joined with Tuora Ski Resort, it has become the largest ski area of New Zealand. Whakapapa ski resort is considered to be a part of Tongariro National Park, which is the oldest national park in the country, and, which is also a world heritage area. Nearby towns of Whakapapa Village, National Park Village, Tokaanu, Turangi, Ohakune, Taupo. The ski resort is operated under a license, issues by the Department of Conservation, and it is owned and run by Ruapehy Alpine Lifts Ltd. There are trails, adjusted for all ability levels, including off – piste expert terrain. It is possible to divide this ski area into three so to say “subareas” Happy Valley (it is a self contained beginners area) the “east” side – it is there the great majority of lifts and services are located, and the “west” side – this area is considered to be highlighted by the lift accessed backcountry terrain.

As for the accommodations, there are hotels, motels and backpacker facilities provided in the Whakapapa ski resort. The resort is also “equipped” with its own restaurant, night club and other fun – providing activities. In addition, there are a thousand and a half bunks on mountain. It is possible to hire skies and other skiing and snowboarding equipment; in addition, there are ski shops, snow groomers, experienced instructors and ski schools, for adults as well as for children.
