Turoa

Right in the middle of the North Island of the country there is the Turoa ski resort, which lies on the southern slopes of its still active volcano, and which can also boast being the largest drop in Australasia by rising its head and shoulder above the Central North Island. This is why it is called “the Giant”. Turoa is also renowed for its expansive terrain, long runs and superb Spring skiing and snowboarding. As for the slope, which faces south, there is plenty of dry powder during the season, which makes the resort a perfect alpine playground for skiers and snowboarders of all levels: starting from the very beginners, and up to the international champions in these kinds of sports. The slopes are fast and open, leading into winding trails andtricky chutes, thanks to which the ski resort can provide thrills aplenty for everyone. Moreover, there is also a gian area of untracked snow for adventurous to explore off – trail, including the spectacular Mangaehuehu Glacier.

Except that everyone should really try taking a walk to the crater lake, which does not usually take more than an hour, although the views it provides are simply stunning ones. Therefore, it is necessary to check the weather conditions beforehand. In addition, there are ski schools with highly experienced coaches provided. It is also possible to rent any type of skiing and snowboarding equipment. There are also workshops, 25 restaurants and bars, as well as gift shops available. After having a day of these challenging black runs, finding the secret powder stashes as going big in the natural half pipe, most visitors of Turoa and its locals head down the mountain to Ohakune to have something to eat, get relaxed and re – live all the adventures and impressions of the day.

Although there is no on – site lodging, a wide variety of hotels, motels, lodges and so on are available in Ohakune; it is about 17 kilometers away from the Turoa ski resort.

As for the snowboarding, there is a terrain park, half pipe and skier / snowboarders courses on site.
