Val Gardena

Val Gardena caters to all skiers, though its trails are more suiable for intermediate skiers. All the main resorts of the area offers a great variety for other sports, as well as amazing apres-ski options.
Val Gardena

The Val Gardena valley stretches at the bottom of the Langkofel Mountain (3181 m). The center of the region is Sella (3151 m), since one of the main entertainments for alpine skiers here is Sela Ronda that is skiing around this mountain clockwise or counter-clockwise. In addition to direction the difference is that in the first case 14 km of lift way is added to 23 km of trails, in the second 16 km is added. To overcome the circle without stops takes about 5 hours, but it should be taken into account that lifts and trails are closed early.  Those who like to circle may visit Val Gardena in February to take part in traditional night marathon via four passes in the Dolomite Alps (42 km).

The ski zone at the elevation of 1236 – 2518 m has total of 120 km of groomed trails. There are many opportunities here both for beginners and for experienced skiers. The most difficult is hummocky trail Saslonch (3500 m, elevation change 839 m), where every year in the middle of January one of the World Cup stages is held. The longest trail is Seseda – St. Urlich (9000 m, elevation change 1275 m, intermediate).

The major resorts of the region are St. Christina, St. Ulrich (Ortisei), and Wolkenstein (Selva Gardena). All these mountain villages have the opportunities for going in for various sports. The major sports here are mountain climbing, cross country skiing and skating, swimming, tennis and squash, riding, paragliding. Cross country skiers can pass to the neighboring Seiser Alm region by specially laid trails. In Trentino – Alto – Adige region on the Austrian boarder there are two official languages: Italian and German. The locals find many grounds to be proud of.  Ortsei village was listed in Guinness World Records when here the skis of 102 m length were manufactured and 101 instructors of local ski school downhilled to the valley on them. You may learn the history of the region and ladins’ cultural traditions in   Cesa di Ladins museum of local lore in St. Ulrich.
