Monte Rosa is the second largest European mountain (4663 m) rising above the Val d'Ayas, Gressoney, and Valsesia valleys. The three valleys are connected by the system of lifts since they can be considered one ski region. Resort villages located in these valleys are typical for Val d’Aosta: they stretched in the mountains and often don’t even look like sport centers. As everywhere in Italy there are many tourists here, nevertheless you may sometimes fill yourself pathfinder on Monte Rosa’s sides. Alagna, one of the most famous villages, attracts by its remote location at the edge of the Valsesia Valley. Of total 25 km of groomed trails 8 km are considered to be difficult, 10 km – intermediate, 7 km – easy. From Punta Indren upper station at the altitude of 3260 m one can get via Rifugio Gnifetti to the peak of Punta Margherita (4559 m). But it is for very experienced mountain climbers. Alpine skiers are especially interested in the slope going from Punta Indreden to the village – the longest in this part of the Italian Alps (15 000 m, elevation change 2000 m). At its upper section steep rocks rise above on both sides. From Bocchetta intermediate station (2400 m) the easy trail goes over the open side. Ski altitudes in the valleys of Monte Rosa massif are 1200 - 3600 m, the mountain plateau can be used for skiing even in summer. Staying in every village has its advantages.
