Livigno

Livigno is a village at the elevation of 1826 m near Swiss boarder. Once it was called Italian Tibet due to its remote location in the mountains. Now it is connected with Engadin underneath by La Schera mountain tunnel (till 20.00, fare charged) and with Bormio by the highway over the Foscanio pass (35 km). Livigno belongs to Alta Valtellina ski region: common ski pass gives the opportunity to use Bormio and Santa Caterina trails, free ski buses ply between the resorts.

Mountainsides rise above the both sides of the Livigno village stretching along the center street.  The nature created two skiing areas here: Monte della Neve (westward) and Carosello (eastward). Upper lift stations are located at the elevation of almost 2800 m on both sides.

The most difficult and interesting trails are those going from Monte della Velle peak (2785 m) to the valley.  From Mottolino (2349 m) one may go down over the opposite slope to Trepalle from where long and gradual slope leads to Livigno. The most difficult trail starts at Monte Sponda (2576 m, elevation change 462 m). 

Many short blue trails go over opposite slopes to Livigno: here and in Costaccia region beginners will find perfect conditions. Above at Vetta Blessaccia sides slopes are more diverse. Cable car rises to the elevation of 2797 m, where mainly red trails start.  Blessacia trail is considered to be really difficult (2300 m, elevation change 760 m). Livigno and Vetta Blessaccia are connected by the longest trail on this side (4800 m, elevation change 980 m). Starting from Lago Salin (2694 m) you may go over the mountain ridge and master virgin slopes of the desert Federia valley, but better to take a guide with you.

Lavigno and its vast groomed slopes appeal to snowboarders very much. Cross country skiers will find almost 40 km of trails in the outskirts.  The favorite resort entertainments are motor sled and dog sled races. Livigno has indoor swimming pool, tennis courts and gym. Telemark Club Livigno regularly holds international La Skieda Telemark Festival where everyone can take part.

Tourists can’t get bored in Lavigno due to numerous bars, restaurants, discos, and shops. This resort is a free trade zone and many things, including skiing equipment, can be bought at best prices.
