The Three Valleys (Les Trois Vallées) is the largest ski region in the world. Competitions in various winter sports are held here every year. Much of the sports centers’ popularity is owed to the 1992 Olympic Games.
Ski-pass (for 6 days and more) allows passing all the Olympic trails in one day without extra charge. But the main advantage of the Three Valleys is not its former fame, but perfect condition for Alpine skiers and the beauty of the landscape formed by three parallel mountain ridges.
The numbers impress: ski zone – 1300 - 3200 m, number of downhill trails – 261, their total length – 600 km (difficult – 150 km, intermediate – 250 km, easy – 200 km), lifts – 200, snow cannons – 1250, instructors in ski schools – 1320.
There are special snow and fun parks and board-cross tracks for snowboarders. Those who love virgin skiing will also be satisfied. Ski-pass bought at any of the resorts is valid not only for ski bus of this resort but for lifts in all the valleys.
It is not by chance that Val Thorens is called the roof of the Three Valleys: there is no resort in the French Alps located at such a high elevation. The ski center built within the old village is located at the altitude of 2300 m above sea level. Karon Mountain from where one can see Mont Blanc in a clear day is 3200 m high. The cable way leads to its top. Ski bus plies between Val Thorens and Les Ménuires resort.
The landscape of Maurienne valley is formed by five glaciers, two of them give the opportunity to ski even in summer. Of course, in the lower zone snow cover lasts longer than in the neighboring valleys. The vast slopes of Pointe de Thorens, Pierre Lorry, and Plan Bouchet are popular among those who love virgin skiing.
The total length of laid trails is 115 km. The most difficult downhill trail is La Cascade (55 m, elevation change 170 m). Cross country trails and marked walking paths are short (4-5 km). Snow park in Val Thorens is popular among snowboarders.
Indoor sport center has basketball and volleyball courts, tennis and squash courts, fitness center. Aquaclub unites swimming pool, hammam, saunas, Jacuzzi, and tanning salon. In Fun Park children of 2 – 6 years can master ski jumping and have leisure entertainment that makes for their physical development.
At night one can snowmobile. Special club is opened for amateur paragliders. Fitz Roy hotel offers the course of treatment with natural muds and salts.
The landscape of the Maurienne valley is stern and severe. The cozier seem to tourists local restaurants (about 50) where exquisite French cuisine is served. Night clubs and bars are opened till 4 a.m. Suprette @ Nutis and Suprette Mercado shopping centers offer essential goods, ski suits, and clothes.
