Le Deux Alpes – high-mountain resort located on the boarder between the Northern and the Southern Alps. The climate here is special: the snow cover is deep and safe, and average annual duration of sun shinning is longer than in the neighboring areas. But the main thing is resort’s location at the foot of the largest French glacier skiable in summer. The steep slopes of the Oisans Mountains rise above the valley (length about 2 km, width about 500 m). The Oisans Mountains are a part of the Ecrins massif declared a national park. The main peaks are Meije (3983 m) named after its explorer (1877) and Rateau (3809 m). It strikes, but railroad here goes to the top of Dôme de la Lauze (3658 m). It takes 20 minutes to get sportsmen by special express from the resort in the valley to the Mont-de-Lans glacier. The initial part of the downhill is not difficult, but the section between Crêtes (2200 m) and Le Deux Alpes can be overcome only by experienced skiers (though there is a side way). Equally difficult is downhilling from Dôme de la Lauze to La Grave (1450 m), elevation change on this trail is over 2100 m. (One can return by La Grave and La Girose lifts). Beginners should better choose the western slopes of the valley at the foot of Pied Moutet (2339 m) than the eastern ones. Lutin easy trail is lightened on Tuesdays (17.30 – 19.00) and Thursdays (20.30 – 22.00). Sportsmen will find 11 km of prepared trails on the Mont-de-Lans glacier. Snowboarders consider this place to be perfect for International Snowboard Salon, but even without it Le Deux Alpes has enough opportunities for this sport. Those who love hiking may go with instructor to the Veneon Valley where one may see the beauty of the nature and the ruins of ancient settlements. The excursion to the ice cave at the elevation of 3400 m is also fascinating. One may take a special course of ice driving, try mountain climbing and paragliding, skate, toboggan, or snowmobile, master snowshoeing, visit covered swimming pools and fitness center.
