Saariselka

Saariselka has lots to offer for wild nature lovers. It caters a great amount of non-ski activities.
Saariselka

The vast region of Saariselka is sparcely populated, and it is especially appealing for those who love unexplored wilderness. Nevertheless, transport connection with the resort is very convenient: Ivalo airport is located just 30 - 40 km away from here.

Free ski bus plies between hotels and lifts, and in the season peak, from middle February to May, its route is extended to Ivalo. But there is one more way to get from airport to Saariselka: to take snowmobile instead of taxi, change into snowsuit and whirl along snow track (4 h); on the treeless top of the hill you will halt to taste sandwiches with smoked venison and when you get to the hotel your baggage will be already waiting for you. This courageous transfer requires some experience, so beginners usually don’t use it and prefer first to be instructed on snowmobile driving. The duration of snowmobile safari can be extended gradually, since Saariselka offers various routes: from 40 km (with a short halt by the fire) to 120 km (with overnight stop in a typical Lapponian cabin), and also special splitting race over Lapponian hills.

At Törmänen dog breeding farm (8 km from Ivalo) one can start a dog sledge tour along the Shore of Inari Lake (passing 30 – 40 km a day, 3 – 5 days). 4-6 huskies are hitched to the sledge and tourists learn to drive them by their own. Saariselka also has opportunities for other kinds of safari.

The largest of Finland’s national parks (2530 sq. km) is located eastward of the village. Sokosti, the highest hill of the Eastern Lapland (718 m) is located in Urho Kekkonena Park. Cross-country skiing tours (including those lasting for several days) allow to get acquainted with the Eastern part of the region.  The routes have several tens of houses with all the conveniences for tourist to stay overnight.

In former times Lapland was the region of gold diggers. Laanila, for example, preserved 10 mines since the gold-rush times; Tankavaara has the museum and village of gold-diggers.  Every year in the end of August international competitions and  biyearly the World championship of gold diggers are held here. In Inari (70 km) the Northern Lapland Nature Museum and Lapp Culture Museum are opened for visitors.
