Over the last decades all the conditions for alpine skiing have been created in Bulgarian mountains. In many of its regions the thickness of snow cover is so high that it is difficult to find such one in the Central Europe.    It is worthy of note that ski opportunities are available in close proximity to Sofia. Vitosha Mountain where 29 km of marked trails have been laid is located 20 km away from the capital.

The highest mountain of the Vitosha range is Cherni Vryh (2290 m), three major ski centers are located at the altitudes of 1250, 1700, and 1800 m. Like other Bulgarian resorts it provides everything for downhilling and slalom, cross country skiing and foot mountain walks.

Main ski resorts are located in the south in Rila, Rhodopy, and Pirin mountains. Borovets is located on the northern spurs of Rila Mountains, the highest on the Balkan Peninsula. It is the oldest Bulgarian resort where season lasts from the middle January to middle April. Slopes of Musala, the highest of Bulgarian mountain (2925 m) have wonderful equipped trails including those of World Championship.

 Every resort has numerous lifts to take skiers to the mountain tops. The necessary equipment can be rent in ski centers. Qualified instructors work in ski schools.  Special training and entertainment programs have been developed for children.

Ski rest can also be used to become familiar with Bulgaria – the country of ancient culture and deep-rooted traditions.  Landmarks, cloisters and churches, natural areas - everyone will find interesting excursion to his/her taste.
