The Otztal Valley is the largest and probably the most beautiful valley in the Eastern Alps. Otztal Arena is surrounded by about 90 of 3 000m plus peaks, including Wildspitze, the main Tirol’s peak. The snow falls here already in November and snow cannons are almost never used during the season.
Solden (1377 m) and Hochsolden (2090 m) are resort villages in this valley. One can get from one to another by elevator, lift, or by car driving along beautiful road (7 km). Solden is a boisterous resort where even traffic jam sometimes happens on the main street. In Hochsolden the trails end right at the doorstep, so you do not need a car here.
Solden and Hochsolden together with the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers form common ski region. Slopes for easy skiing start near the Giggijoch cabin lift station. Elfer trail, laid from Rotkoglhutte to lower Stabelebahn station, is popular among experienced skiers.
The longest trails lead to Solden from Rettenbach glacier (14 000 m, elevation change 1820 m) and from Geislachkogl top (10 000 m, elevation change 1675 m). The lift with upper Geislachkogl station at the elevation 3058m has very large capacity. Standard trail is for intermediate skiers, Wilde Abfahrt downhill is only for high class sportsmen, however it is often blocked at upper section because of snow slide danger, on its lower section snow melts rather early.
Rosskirpl trail starting from Hainbachjoch pass (7000 m, 1350 m) is the most difficult one in the eastern part of the region. The highest panoramic road (2800 m) leads to the glaciers; there is a tunnel 1700 m long through mountains on the way to the Tiefenbach glacier. Tiefenbach is more popular among snowboarders, Rettenbach – among skiers. Of major interests are long Run trail (from Schwarze Schneid) and trail from Seiter Jochl with a restaurant at its end. In summer one of the glasiers is always open for skiing while the other is prepared for new season.
There is a quiet and peaceful village of Zwiselstein within Solden ski region (4 km). Many skiers prefer to live here and go to the noisy Solden by free ski bus. Solden-Hochsolden ski-pass is not valid in other sport centers of the Otztal Valley.
Freizeit Arena sports center offers going in for 30 sports in addition to swimming pool and sauna. One more reason of the resort popularity is that night life is in full swing not only in restaurants, discos, bars and clubs, but on the slopes also: tireless tourists are skiing and toboganning with tourches.
