The Tyrolean Zillertal Valley comprises 10 skiing areas at the elevations from 550 to 3286 m. Mayrhofen is the largest resort village in the Zillertal Valley which at the elevation of 630 m spreads out into four side valleys. Mountainsides over Mayrhofen are perfectly equipped with lifts. The common ski-pass works here.
Beginners and intermediate skiers will find perfect training slopes at the lower side of Ahorn Mountain. When snow is enough Grosse Filzenabfahrt slope with the elevation change of 1350 m presents special interest.
But the main skiing area near Mayrhofen is formed by Penken (2096 m) mountainsides. On the schemes Penken looks as if meshed with trails and lift lines. There is Finkenberg village 200 m higher than Mayrhofen from where very convenient lift (Finkenberger Almbahn) goes to Penken Joch pass (2095 m). Between upper lift stations of Knorren and Larchwald the slopes to the Horberg Valley start, they are perfect for intermediate skiers. The northern hummocky slopes of Penken will be interesting for superskiers.
The slope from the upper Schafskopf lift station (2250 m) over the side of Gerent Mountain is considered to be difficult. Even experienced enough skiers pass its final section (from intermediate station at the elevation of 1650 m up to Schwendau) by lift, because the marked trail runs through wood.
From Hintertux village one can get to a vertiginous height: at the edge of the valley you have to change lifts three times to get to the upper station (3250 m). Here near the peaks of Olperer (3476 m) and Gefrorene Wand (3286 m) the huge Hintertux glacier starts. The trail leading from here to Hintertux village is well-known (12 000 m, elevation change 1750 m, advanced and intermediate difficulty). The slope leading to the mountain valley of Schlegeistal and the trails between lift lines at Kaserer and Larmstange mountainsides are considered to be interesting. The Hintertux glacier attracts snowboarders (half-pipe – 100m, 60 m).
Those who do not like rarefied mountain air and glacier skiing, get out at the intermediate station near Sommerbergalm restaurant (2080 m). From here they can get to Tuxer Joch pass (2313 m), where there are a lot of easy slopes.
Young people gladly go to Mayrhofen: they can have fun day and night. Various events and concert take place in Eurohaus center (weekly program in the travel bureau). Special events are organized for children. Here, as in any other village of the Zillertal Valley, one can go in for various sports, mostly mountain climbing.
